After History at NCAAs, Delaware’s Toni Sabev Targeting Olympics

Road to Paris: Toni Sabev’s Olympic Dream

When envisioning the road to the Olympics, it’s easy to forget the journey that many swimmers undertake through the American college system. Every corner of the globe, from big countries to small nations, contributes to the pool of 800 swimmers who will gather in Paris this summer for the Olympics. In the lead-up to this momentous event, we are shedding light on the individual stories of these swimmers as they journey on The Road To Paris.

Toni Sabev, a junior from the University of Delaware, has experienced a whirlwind of emotions this spring that has led to historic accomplishments. His journey, fraught with challenges, has finally paid off in ways he never imagined before.

Historic Breakthrough

In the past two seasons, Sabev fell agonizingly short of making the NCAA cut line by the narrowest of margins. In 2023, he missed out by just .06 seconds, landing on the 34th spot in the men’s 100 breaststroke. However, this year proved to be a turning point as he clinched the 26th spot nationally, marking a historic moment as the first swimmer in the history of the Blue Hens to qualify for the NCAA Championships. This achievement was a testament to his resilience and determination in the face of previous setbacks.

Reflecting on his journey to the NCAA Championships, Sabev expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his program and showcase the hard work of his coaches. In Indianapolis, following his impressive performance in the 100 breast, Sabev emphasized the honor he felt in being able to compete at such a prestigious event. His determination and focus were evident as he strived to make his mark on the national stage.

International Aspirations

With his successful NCAA season behind him, Sabev sets his sights on the international stage, aspiring to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics. While 2024 has had its share of challenges, including a disappointing performance at the World Aquatics Championships in Qatar, Sabev remains undeterred in his pursuit of Olympic qualification. The road to Paris is paved with obstacles, but Sabev’s resolve and dedication are unwavering.

Having made his international debut at the 2022 European Championships, Sabev understands the importance of each opportunity to compete at the highest level. His decision to transition to the American college system was a bold move, one that has proven to be instrumental in shaping his career trajectory. With the unwavering support of his brother, Simeon Sabev, and the guidance of Coach Pablo Marmolejo, Sabev is poised to make his mark on the global swimming stage.
