Kaylee McKeown Wins World Female Swimmer of the Year Honors

Aussie Star Kaylee McKeown Receives World Female Swimmer of the Year Win

The shining swimming entity Kaylee McKeown came into the limelight when she reached her first World Championship in 2017. Her brilliant swimming at the young age of sixteen made her stand-out; she finished fourth in the 200 backstroke, demonstrating her talent and breaking the world junior record. A testament to Australian supremacy, she secured the silver in the 200 back event at her second individual medal podium appearance.

Although 2022 was not her year, considering the delays and unfortunate passing of her father Sholto, McKeown exhibited hard work and perseverance. The 2020 Olympic Games, held in 2021, saw her claim gold medals in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, toppling records. Despite her extraordinary feat, it was overshadowed by her team members, especially with the remarkable performance by Emma McKeon and Ariarne Titmus.

A year to celebrate – McKeown’s extraordinary performance

Fast forward to 2023, Kaylee McKeown marked this year in history by achieving something no female swimmer accomplished before. She snagged the gold in all three backstroke events at the World Championships, in a neck-to-neck competition with her rival Regan Smith. An exceptional title next to her name as no other swimmer has won all three distances in one stroke at one meet until now.

McKeown’s victory didn’t stop at the three gold medals in the backstroke; she also led the Australian team to two medley relay silver medals in Fukuoka. She was among the favorites for the 200 IM world title as well, but was controversially disqualified in the semifinals. Despite the initial setback, McKeown powered through and established herself as a giant in the world of swimming.

History Making Feat of World Records

Not stopping at her World Championship victories, McKeown broke world records in all three backstroke events, a groundbreaking feat as the first woman ever to do so. Notably, at the New South Wales State Championships in March, she lowered Smith’s global standard in the 200 back with an impressive time, leaving a mark in the world of swimming with sheer talent and dedication. Additionally, she displayed her prowess at the World Cup circuit winning titles across three events, setting a new world record in the 50 back among her numerous credits.

Evidently, McKeown’s stellar performances earned her the coveted title of World Swimmer of the Year for the first time. She joins a league of legendary Australian swimmers who have held this title and her name will inspire many in the years to come. Additionally, Kaylee tops the list as the seventh Australian to receive this honor, making the country’s triumphs shine on the global stage far more visibly.

A Decade of Dominance

Kaylee’s victory in the awards comes at a time when the Australian swimmers excelled, with McKeown’s winning taking the country’s tally to three years in a row. This feat has never been more appreciated, especially for her contribution towards the Australian dominance in the world of swimming. The win is an addition to the many achievements of Australian swimmers thus far especially Kaylee’s, which stands out as historic. Her unrelenting spirit, determination and unparalleled skills have clinched the title for her in a stellar year!
