What the SwimmingHQ Testing Lab Does

Our goal is not to declare one product universally best. Different swimmers have different needs. A product that works well for competitive racing may be a poor choice for someone trying to protect long hair, for example.
How We Review Products
1. We Start With the Real-World Use Case
Before testing a product, we identify what problem it is supposed to solve and who it is designed for. We consider factors such as swimming style, hair type and volume, training frequency, fit requirements, and intended environment.
2. We Research the Product
We review manufacturer specifications, sizing information, materials, intended use, care instructions, and current product details. Manufacturer claims are treated as claims to verify—not automatically as test results.
3. We Test the Product in Practical Conditions
Where a product is available for hands-on testing, we use it in normal swimming conditions and record observations such as fit, comfort, stability, ease of use, water resistance, fogging, movement, and durability. The exact test conditions vary by product because a swim cap, pair of goggles, and swimsuit cannot be evaluated in exactly the same way.
4. We Look at the Details That Matter
We pay particular attention to the points that are easy to miss in a product description: where water enters, whether a cap shifts during turns, whether goggles maintain a seal, how a product feels during longer sessions, whether sizing matches the manufacturer’s guidance, and whether a design works for its intended hair type or swimming style.
5. We Compare Products on Relevant Criteria
When we compare several products, we use the same general criteria wherever practical. The criteria may include performance, fit, comfort, durability, ease of use, hair capacity or protection, and value. Not every criterion carries the same importance for every product category.
Our Approach to Ratings
When we use a numerical rating, it represents our editorial assessment based on the criteria explained on the relevant review page. A rating is not a laboratory measurement, certification, or guarantee of future performance.
Our ratings consider the factors most relevant to the product category and its intended use. Depending on the product, these can include performance, fit and stability, comfort, ease of use, durability, hair capacity or protection, and value. We do not use one fixed weighting for every type of swimming product because the most important characteristics can differ between a swim cap, goggles, swimwear, or another accessory.
We avoid presenting a product as perfect when it has meaningful limitations. Our reviews include both strengths and weaknesses because those details are often more useful than a simple overall score.
Waterproof and Water-Resistance Testing
Swim caps deserve special attention because the term “waterproof” can create unrealistic expectations. A swim cap is not a watertight seal around the entire head. Water can enter around the hairline, ears, neck, seams, or other gaps, particularly during movement.
When we evaluate a cap for keeping hair dry, we focus on how effectively it reduces water exposure in the conditions tested. We do not treat “waterproof” as meaning that every swimmer will achieve completely dry hair.
Unless a result has been measured using a controlled, repeatable instrument-based method, we do not present an estimated percentage of hair dryness as a scientific measurement. Where appropriate, we describe the observed result in plain language and explain the conditions in which it occurred.

Hands-On Testing vs. Product Research
