World University Games: Off Asian Record at Worlds, Li Bingjie Adds Gold in 800 Freestyle

The sixth day of swimming competition at the World University Games in Chengdu, China was highly anticipated due to the performance of Qin Haiyang in the 50-meter breaststroke. As a recent sweep of the breaststroke events at the World Championships and now the No. 2 performer in history in the one-lap event, all eyes were on Qin.

Women’s 800 Freestyle (Final)

In the women’s 800 freestyle final, China’s Li Bingjie, who had previously won a silver medal in the event at the World Championships, claimed the gold medal. Although Li was 17 seconds off her Asian record from Fukuoka, her time of 8:30.74 was enough to secure the title. Coming in second place and earning the silver medal was South Africa’s Dune Coetzee, who touched in 8:32.88. Italy’s Noemi Cesarano completed the podium with a time of 8:33.12.

Women’s 50 Breaststroke (Semifinals)

Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova, who already triumphed in the 100 breast and 200 breast, advanced to the final of the 50 breaststroke as the third seed. She clocked a time of 31.13, trailing behind Poland’s Dominika Sztandera (30.68) and Brazil’s Jhennifer Alves da Conceicao (31.11).

Men’s 100 Butterfly (Final)

In the thrilling men’s 100 butterfly final, Poland’s Jakub Majerski claimed the gold medal with a time of 51.41. Leading from start to finish, Majerski showcased his dominance in the event. His fellow countryman, Adrian Jaskiewicz, made an impressive late charge, moving from fifth place at the turn to secure the silver medal in 51.93. Adilbek Mussin of Kazakhstan clinched the bronze medal with a time of 52.03.
