ISHOF Inducts Newest Class to Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame

The Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame (MISHOF) is thrilled to unveil the distinguished Masters Class of 2023. This year, ISHOF will be honoring a class of seven exceptional individuals from five different countries, each selected for their remarkable contributions to the sport of swimming. The class includes three swimmers, one diver, one water polo player, one synchronized/artistic swimmer, and one esteemed contributor. The induction ceremony will take place in conjunction with the ISHOF Honoree weekend on Saturday, October 4-5, 2024, in the beautiful city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Among this year’s honorees are some truly inspiring individuals who have dedicated themselves to the sport of swimming. Clary Munns, a 78-year-old grandmother from Australia, has set numerous world records in backstroke, butterfly, and I.M. events, proving that age is no barrier to sporting success. Another standout honoree is Tom Wolf from the United States, who has set an impressive 28 FINA Masters World Records in backstroke and I.M., showcasing his incredible talent and dedication to the sport. These are just a few examples of the exceptional individuals who will be inducted into the Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame this year.

Meet the Honorees

Clary Munns (AUS)
Clary Munns, a member of the Blacktown City Masters Swimming Club, has been breaking records since 1988. With 1297 world points and numerous world titles under her belt, she is a true ambassador for the sport at all levels. In addition to her sporting achievements, Clary was named the New South Wales Masters Athlete of the Year in 2016, further solidifying her place in swimming history.

Tom Wolf (USA)
Starting his Masters swimming career in the 25-29 age group, Tom Wolf has since competed in eight different age groups, setting new records along the way. With 949 world points and a top-ten ranking 16 times, Tom’s dedication to the sport is truly impressive and deserving of recognition.

Glen Christiansen (SWE)
Former Swedish Olympic swimmer Glen Christiansen has continued his success as a Masters swimmer and coach. With 908 world points, 24 world records, and 26 medals from Masters World Championships, Glen’s impact on the sport is undeniable. His dedication to swimming is an inspiration to swimmers around the world.

Tarja Liljestrom (FIN)
Tarja Liljestrom, a former Olympian, has transitioned into Masters diving, where she has excelled with multiple world records and 24 medals in FINA World Championships. Her commitment to the sport and success as a competitor and judge make her a true asset to the Masters diving community.

Jose Luis Martin Gomez (ESP)
Jose Luis Martin Gomez has been a driving force in Masters water polo, both as a player and organizer. With medals from FINA Masters World Championships and a dedication to growing the sport through tournaments and international competitions, Jose is a true ambassador for Masters water polo.

Lizzi Jakobsen (USA)*
Lizzi Jakobsen was a trailblazer in the world of synchronized and artistic swimming, with multiple gold medals and world titles to her name. Her dedication to the sport and success at the highest levels of competition make her a deserving honoree in the Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Nadine Day (USA)
Nadine Day’s contributions to Masters swimming go beyond her achievements in the pool. As a dedicated volunteer and leader in the Masters community, Nadine has been instrumental in shaping the future of the sport. Her commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and lifelong fitness through swimming has earned her numerous awards and accolades, making her a true champion of Masters swimming.
